About Luisa:
What course are you studying and what level?
PhD in Population Health
Why did you chose that course?
I wanted to do something that would allow me to help people at a big scale, so using statistics and computing tools through epidemiology to do so became a big motivation to choose the field.
When, where and why did you start rowing? And what do you love about the sport?
Started rowing in February 2011, at Real Club España, in Mexico City, Mexico. I started rowing because I injured myself after 10 years of artistic gymnastics practice and the doctors recommended a low-impact sport. I really like that rowing is both an individual and team sport, and every day you train you can improve on something, which is easily measured and reflected through splits and times.
What was your first rowing club and coach?
Alejandra Menzi and José Trejo at Real Club España
What or who was the earliest sporting inspiration you remember as a child?
My whole family has always been very sporty, from my aunt who was a National Team gymnast, to my dad who plays tennis at a pretty high level at the veteran circuit. But in 2008, I went to the Bela Karolyi summer gymnastics camp and I saw Nastia Liukin train ahead of the Beijing 2008 Olympics and I was just amazed.
How has rowing and being part of the Boat Race squad impacted your life?
Rowing has been a part of my life since I was 12. I had already retired. The Boat Race has given me motivation to pursue a high level again to crown my career.
If you weren’t a rower, what sport do you think you’d excel at?
I row because I can’t do anything else (probably powerlifting)
What is your favourite non-academic book?
Contact by Carl Sagan
