About Sian:
What course are you studying and what level?
DPhil Healthcare Data Science
Why did you chose that course?
I want to learn how to use my mathematical background to make a positive difference to the world. The healthcare setting is, to me, the best place to focus my skills and attention and this course will teach me cutting edge data science techniques I can then put to good use.
When, where and why did you start rowing? And what do you love about the sport?
I learnt to row at Balliol College, Oxford where I studied for my undergraduate degree in Maths and Statistics. I was in my first year, in the middle of the pandemic, and rowing with a mask on in the boat for my first few outings! I was excited to try rowing in Oxford having never even seen a rowing boat before I arrived. I love that rowing requires discipline and honest hard work. It has taught me a lot about the power and influence of the teams around me, and about my own limits and capabilities.
What was your first rowing club and coach?
First and only club before OUBC is Balliol College Boat Club. First coach was Oli Gerrard!
What or who was the earliest sporting inspiration you remember as a child?
I wasn’t sport obsessed as a kid, but I did always love watching the Olympics and my family are very cricket-oriented. British athletes like Mo Farah, Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins, Jess Ennis-Hill always stick in my head as the greatest, and I always found their achievements very inspirational.
How has rowing and being part of the Boat Race squad impacted your life?
Being part of the Boat Race squad is so exciting, and I never thought I’d be doing what I am now. The opportunity is amazing and I know I’m learning things I’ll carry with me forever.
If you weren’t a rower, what sport do you think you’d excel at?
I’ve always loved playing netball. I always played at school, and I still occasionally play for my mum’s team in the local league at home.
