About Kate:

What course are you studying and what level?

Secondary PGCE in History.

Why did you chose that course?

I completed my undergrad degree in History last year, and knew I wanted the opportunity to pass my love for the subject on to others.

When, where and why did you start rowing? And what do you love about the sport?

I started rowing at school back home in Australia, in year 7 (and I’m currently in my tenth season!). As a cox, I love the challenge of trying to make every boat I sit in faster, but even more than that, I love being part of a team where every member is working towards the same goal.

What was your first rowing club and coach?

Pembroke School Rowing Club, and Gill Harfield

What or who was the earliest sporting inspiration you remember as a child?

Didn’t really have one – didn’t see myself being an athlete, which is funny to look back on now.

How has rowing and being part of the Boat Race squad impacted your life?

I couldn’t imagine my Cambridge experience without CUBC – there’s really no event like the Boat Race, and the people make it worth getting out of bed at 5am in January, which is really saying something.

If you weren’t a rower, what sport do you think you’d excel at?

I think I tried enough sports as a kid to know that coxing is my calling.

What is your favourite non-academic book?

In Memoriam, by Alice Winn
