About Laura:

What course are you studying and what level?

DPhil Engineering Science

Why did you chose that course?

I was introduced to some really interesting satellite communications problems when I interned at NASA, and my research at Oxford provides an opportunity to explore those, and similar, topics deeply.

When, where and why did you start rowing? And what do you love about the sport?

I started rowing when sports opened back up after covid, at the start of my second year of my undergrad. I wanted something to do in my free time, and it just so happened that they were short a coxswain right as I joined the team.
I love the fact that rowing brings you outside everyday, rain or shine. I’ve found that it always seems to act as a reset from the chaos of the rest of my life and coursework.

What was your first rowing club and coach?

Kate Hanseman at the Case Western Reserve University Rowing Team

What or who was the earliest sporting inspiration you remember as a child?

Usain Bolt

How has rowing and being part of the Boat Race squad impacted your life?

I think at the most basic level it definitely has taken a bit of control over my schedule, but its also been such a huge part of my experience at Oxford. I think its really hard to spend this much time with anyone and not get close with people, which has been really great as someone who’s moved across an ocean to come here.

If you weren’t a rower, what sport do you think you’d excel at?

Jiu Jitsu. I used to train jiu jitsu when I wasn’t on the water, but I got injured and decided to step back for a bit to focus on coxing and heal.

What is your favourite non-academic book?

Dune
