About Maddy :

What course are you studying and what level?

BA Philosophy, Politics and Economics

Why did you chose that course?

I really enjoy all three subjects and I wanted to do a course which had some variety and open career prospects.

When, where and why did you start rowing? And what do you love about the sport?

I erged a bit before coming to Oxford, but I properly started in my first year at Christ Church College. I started because my parents thought I would be good at it and I quickly loved it. I love the community of motivated and inspiring people that make the early mornings worth it

What was your first rowing club and coach?

Christ Church College Boat Club and James Bracey was my first coach.

What or who was the earliest sporting inspiration you remember as a child?

Mark Cavendish, tour de France.

How has rowing and being part of the Boat Race squad impacted your life?

I think that being surrounded by such an amazing squad of motivated, talented and driven people is such a privilege. Everyone makes you want to be better, not just within rowing but in other parts of life too

If you weren’t a rower, what sport do you think you’d excel at?

I’m retired from time trialling, but I think cycling road racing would be fun

What is your favourite non-academic book?

A thousand splendid suns by Khaled Hosseini
