Katy Hempson
Boat Race History
- 2023 – Cambridge Women’s Lightweight Boat
About Katy:
Why did you choose Medicine (Clinical)?
I’ve always wanted to do medicine, it was something that was suggested to me at quite a young age. I want to work with people and help others, I’m interested in the sciences and health, I’m passionate about health equality and accessibility, and I want to work in a high stakes high pressure environment.
Why did you first try rowing?
For the sake of trying out the classic/iconic Oxbridge sport! I never really expected to carry on with it (I was never a fan of early mornings), but here we are.
Who introduced you to the sport of rowing?
Kate Hurst – Head Coach and Boatwoman at Christ’s. at Christ’s College Boat Club
Where else have you rowed?
I have rowed mainly with Christ’s College and then CUBC – I was the 5 seat in the winning LW Women’s Blue Boat last year. I have briefly trained and competed with Cantabrigian Rowing Club (Cantabs) during the holidays.
What are your proudest rowing achievements?
Winning the Lightweight Boat Race in 2023 and being part of the CUBC clean sweep, winning every single race against Oxford.
Racing with my close friend Livi Lisi-Vega (LW Blue Boat 2023 6 seat) at Metropolitan Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta as lightweight rowers in the Openweight categories and still beating many other openweight crews.
What would winning The Boat Race mean to you?
It would be pretty incredible to follow on from last years clean sweep as a returner, with new friends and teammates as well as those returning, and to show that Cambridge isn’t complacent and we are prepared to dominate again.
