About William:
Why did you choose BCL – Bachelor of Civil Law?
Taught graduate course in law, with the opportunity to choose 4 specific areas of law to look at in depth and in their wider context. Appeals to me as a chance to practice legal reasoning with a real focus on discourse and debate throughout seminars, tutorials and exams.
Why did you first try rowing?
I simply got lucky that, at my local state-comprehensive school, it was a right of passage that all new students – normally about 130 of us – would give rowing a try at the end of the first week. I was very un-sporty but my friends convinced me to give it a go!
Who introduced you to the sport of rowing?
Christopher Morrell and Mark Wilkinson at The Windsor Boys’ School
Where else have you rowed?
Melbourne University Boat Club (January – March 2019), Oxford Brookes University (2019 – 2023)
What are your proudest rowing achievements?
Winning the Temple Challenge Cup and Ladies’ Challenge Plate at Henley, with Brookes
2022 Under 23 World Champion and World Best Time in the GBR u23 M4+
Do you have a favourite Boat Race? Which one and why?
2000 – the race was pretty much level until Chiswick pier, when Cambridge cracked and Oxford leapt away to win. I like the race because Oxford were so confident as the losing crew to bide their time and keep Cambridge under pressure until they simply ran out of energy and couldn’t keep up.
What would winning The Boat Race mean to you?
A stake in the history of our sport.
